Cannabidiol (CBD) is a naturally occurring substance derived from cannabis. This substance has been widely used to treat various illnesses and alleviate different symptoms. Some use it for relaxation, sleep improvement, and pain relief. Others believe it can also provide relief from symptoms of depression.

Because of its many uses, CBD oil has amassed popularity in recent years. Also, more and more products that contain this substance have been developed for people to enjoy its benefits. However, unlike medications certified by regulatory boards, many CBD products don't have recommended dosages. Given this, it can be tricky to determine the correct quantity to meet your requirements.

If you'd like to give CBD products a try, here are some factors to consider when determining the correct dosage for you:

CBD Dosage Depends On Your Body Type

A person's body weight is one of the primary considerations in deciding the correct dosage of CBD that would suit their needs. Thus, your doctor will recommend a specific dosage that you can take per day, depending on how much you weigh. For example, taking between 20 to 1,500 milligrams (mg) of CBD is considered safe for an average adult. On the other hand, the CBD dosage for children usually starts at 0.50 mg per pound of body weight to be given three times per day.

As with other medications, it's crucial to stick to the doctor's guidelines to ensure its effectiveness and your safety as well. Your doctor's recommendations are vital before taking any medication in conjunction with a CBD product because it could have an adverse effect if you go below or above the prescribed amount.

However, if your doctor didn't specify any dosage, starting with a small dosage may be helpful and gradually increasing it depending on your body's reaction to the product. For instance, you can start with 20 mg of CBD per day to treat pain, then gradually increase it by five mg per day for best results.

The Amount You Take Depends On The CBD Product You Choose

There are several CBD products you can choose from, depending on what you want to treat and your doctor's recommendation. The type of product you use can influence how much you should take in a day, how fast your body absorbs it, and how quick the effect would be.

Here are some examples of different CBD products:

  • Edibles such as gummies

  • Oils and tinctures

  • Pills or capsules

  • Topical ointment, lotions, and creams

Some products take effect at a faster rate, such as CBD oil tinctures and sprays. Thus, these products may be taken in smaller doses. Meanwhile, edibles or gummies usually contain five mg of CBD per piece. Hence, some of them are recommended to be taken one at a time.

Calculate The Amount Before Intake

Generally, CBD products like edibles, gummies, oils, or pills, clearly indicate the amount of CBD in each serving. For instance, CBD pills may explicitly mention that each capsule contains five mg of the substance in the packaging. On the other hand, CBD oils that come in a dropper bottle may indicate how much of the substance is included in a single drop, how many drops should be taken for each use, and how often the oil should be used per day.

However, some brands may not have these specifications on their packaging. If you have a liquid product that only shows the CBD content of the entire bottle, you can calculate your intake per drop.

One drop of liquid amounts to 0.05 milliliters (mL). It means that a 20 mL bottle contains 400 drops of liquid. If the whole bottle contains 2,000 mg of CBD, each drop will have five mg of CBD. If you need to take 30 mg of CBD per day, you'll need two drops of the liquid for each use, and you need to take the product thrice a day.

Effects

CBD products have different onset times, meaning that some items may take effect faster than others. In general, users may need to wait for up to two hours to feel the effects of edibles in their system. Meanwhile, tinctures applied under the tongue usually need between 15 to 45 minutes before taking effect. Topical products may take up to an hour, while vape products commonly need up to 30 minutes to take full effect.

However, these onset times may vary depending on the body's reaction to CBD. Thus, it's essential to be cautious about re-dosing. It may be wise to allow a few minutes for the product to take effect before taking more to avoid undesirable side effects.

While consuming too much CBD has been observed not to cause serious adverse effects on the body, it's still likely for some to experience its typical side effects. Some of the commonly observed side effects of taking unusually high doses of CBD include appetite and weight changes, diarrhea, or fatigue. To avoid adverse side effects, it may be helpful to start with a lower dosage for the first few days and observe your body's reaction to the product.

The effects usually last for around two to six hours for most CBD products. Meanwhile, the duration of the effects may vary depending on several factors. These factors include how the product was used, how much was consumed, and the body's tolerance.

Taking Other Medications

If you're taking other medications in conjunction with CBD usage, it's essential to consult with your doctor regarding the amount you should take to avoid adverse effects. While CBD has been observed to be well-tolerated by many users, much is yet to be discovered about its interactions with other drugs. Also, it's widely believed to react with medications such as blood thinners and antidepressants.

Thus, it's crucial to seek your doctor's advice regarding your use of CBD with other medications.

 Conclusion

When it comes to purchasing CBD products, it's vital to select your sources carefully. While CBD use has continued to be popular in many locations, it's still considered to be largely unregulated. Therefore, it may be wise to buy only from certified distributors and pharmacies.

Moreover, people may react differently to CBD products, which should also be considered before you proceed with usage. Although this substance is widely believed to be safe and well-tolerated, many factors can influence its overall effects on your system. To be safe, it's generally recommended to consult with your doctor or healthcare provider before using CBD.
