As Earth Month of 2022 culminates, Gap aims to perpetuate the responsible tasks of fashion brands by switching over its production to sustainable processes. The journey has been long enough for the global retailer who has embraced the equity of cultural groups over time, whether a collaboration with Dapper Dan or fostering Kanye West’s sartorial vision. Gap Inc. is now boasting of its sustainable journey as it has already saved over 500 million liters of water on its clothing [or ‘drip’].

Jenn Swain, Gap Inc. Head of Sustainability expresses, “we believe that fashion should enable individuals to express themselves and their values, including sustainability, equality, and belonging. Gap’s purpose is to create change that is sustainable, [enriches] communities, and [is] better for this generation and the next. To do this, we are committed to increasing representation and shaping a more equitable industry by working with designers and artists from all different communities, finding ways to collaboratively push fashion forward—creatively, and sustainably.”

Since 1994, Gap has established Supplier Sustainability Program for its manufacturing. Implementing social and environmental standards for its suppliers and other parts of Gap Inc. and their supply chain would monitor their performance in those areas. In 2004, Gap Inc. published its first Public Sustainability Report documenting its sustainable efforts from 2003, and in 2007, it founded the Personal Advancement & Career Enhancement program through life-skill and career education.

Swain states that “Gap has been on its sustainability journey for a while now. We established social and environmental standards for our suppliers back in 1994 and were a founding member of the Sustainable Apparel Coalition in 2010. We have a strong foundation in product sustainability and are raising our ambition through 2030 with [an] increased focus on [lower-carbon] materials, using less water, and empowering the women who make our clothes.

Gap Inc. is promising to lead on sustainability in the garnet manufacturing industry and not react to climate change and social activism like other companies. The goal is to make quality clothing responsibly, from fiber-making to the washing process, and the water used.

With its water-saving programs like Washwell, operating since 2016, Gap Inc. has fostered the use of 20% less water compared to conventional wash methods used by the garment-making industry. It aims to make 100% of denim and woven bottoms using these techniques by 2025, making 86% of its bottoms with Washwell techniques. The brand plans to use 100% more sustainable cotton and 100% recycled polyesters by 2030. These include styles from denim to khaki pants, recycled-poly swim, and organic tees found on the Gap Inc.
