What to Wear for Every Type of Party This Season
By PAGE Editor
Part of the joy of winter is the chance it gives us to attend a range of parties during the build-up to Christmas. Getting the best from party season, however, means being able to call upon outfits that will suit any occasion. Let’s take a look at a few of your options.
Casual House Parties & Friendly Get-Togethers
Sometimes, the occasion will be that little bit more relaxed. This might give you the opportunity to wear cosy, coarse-knit fabrics. Think wool. On the other hand, suede and velvet might hold their own special appeal at this time of year. Textures and layered prints are en vogue this year.
Work Parties & Smart Evening Events
Your office party should be treated as slightly more formal than the one being hosted at a friend's house. You’ll want to push the boat out, while still keeping it slightly formal. Recently, there’s been a definite shift towards eighties nostalgia, with padded shoulders and mullets making a comeback. Make sure that your attire matches what’s demanded by the invitation. If you’re told to be ‘smart casual’, then err on the side of smartness. You can always dress down a little once you’re there. Having a versatile piece such as a midi dress or jumpsuit that also doubles for a wedding guest dress can be a savvy investment.
Festive & Holiday Parties
If there’s an explicit focus on Christmas, then you’ll want to employ a few festive colours. This tends to mean greens, reds, and golds. You can often create the required sense of the season with just a few sparkling touches, here and there. Or, you might throw on a statement coat, or a velvet or sequined dress.
Formal Events & Black-Tie Occasions
In some cases, you might find yourself invited to the most formal of occasions. A black-tie event tends to mean opting for a floor-length ballgown, or a well-chosen midi. Velvet, crepe and satin tend not only to look and feel amazing, but also to look the part in photographs. If you already have an outfit that you favour for formal events, then this might be a chance to spice it up with a few glittering festive accessories.
Outdoor & Evening Garden-Style Parties
You’ll need to be prepared for the possibility that you’ll be eating, drinking, or simply chatting outside. In some cases, this may happen when you’re smoking, or waiting to get into a venue. In others, the entire event might be held outdoors. Layer up with thermal undergarments, and pick out a thick overcoat that will keep you toasty, even when the weather is frosty. Animal prints are firmly back in style this winter.
