1.  Combine your laundry room and bathroom/kitchen or office

Rather than designating one space for a condo laundry room, you could kill two birds with one stone and add your laundry machines to your kitchen or bathroom.

Not only is this a space-saver, but you’ll also conserve water by sharing your hookup between your washer, dryer, sinks, shower, dishwasher, or other similar units. 

This type of setup is best accomplished with smaller laundry machines, which can be placed in a corner or under the sink out of the way of other appliances.

Further still, if you have another room in your condo that you use as an office space, you could convert a portion of that room into a laundry room. This will provide you with more space for storage, separate your fabrics, and fold and sort your clothing.

2.  Install a one-wall floor-to-ceiling laundry unit

A great way to make your laundry setup more compact is to install a floor-to-ceiling cabinet and countertop unit. You can leave space for your machines below the countertops or have them stacked on one side of the wall adjacent to the cabinets and counter space.

With this type of installation, you can use the cabinets to store detergent, hangers, clothespins, and other laundry essentials, and the countertops for folding and sorting your laundry.

Also, install a countertop made of durable materials, like quartz or porcelain, to make cleaning up detergent and other chemical spills easier to manage. 

3. Convert your hallway nook or closet

If your condo is fitted with a roomy hall closet, a wall nook, or an alcove, you can easily convert these areas into a space for doing laundry. While this won’t allow as much space as a full-size room, there are a few things you can do to make this area more useful.

For example, for condos with wall nooks or alcoves, you can attach a fold-out ironing board or table to the wall, which can be used both to iron clothes and as a surface for folding laundry. 

You can further maximize this space by stacking your machines and adding overhead cabinets or floating shelves to store your laundry items. 

As well, if you have a double-door closet, you can stack your washer and dryer on one side and use the other side for storage. 

You can even make use of the closet doors by adding hangers, where you can hang items like foldable laundry baskets or a lightweight ironing board.

If you’re low on space for storage, you can also hang a closet organizer on the door for your laundry soap, clothes pins, and similar items. 

4. Only install a washer

While having a washer and dryer is a huge convenience, if you’re looking to conserve space, simply install a washing machine and defer to air-drying your clothes.

To make the drying process easier, you can purchase a foldable drying rack, which can be stored in a hall closet in between each use. 

You can also hang your wet clothes on the curtain rod in your shower if you don’t want to lay your clothes out in the open.

Not only will this help save space, but depending on the building you live in, this will also prevent you from needing to have extra electrical work done in your unit to be able to install a dryer.

5. Store the laundry machines behind cabinet doors

If you don’t like the look of your laundry machines being out in the open, you can strategically hide them behind cabinet or closet doors for a more cohesive layout.

For example, if you live in a condo with a small laundry room, you can store your washer and dryer under your kitchen sink, storage island, or peninsula. 

This type of setup will allow you the convenience of in-suite laundry without having to sacrifice the aesthetics of your home design. 

6. Install floating shelves above laundry machines

As we touched on above, storage units for your detergent, clothespins, and other laundry items are essential. However, if you don’t have the budget for cabinets or your building doesn’t allow you to install such heavy hardware, one of the more common condo laundry room ideas is to install floating shelves instead.

One downside to open shelves is that your detergent containers and similar items will be displayed out in the open, which may feel more cluttered and disorganized.

However, you can make this space more stylish by adding your laundry soap, beads, powdered detergent, and other essentials to decorative jars. 

You can also store these items in collapsable or wicker storage bins and place them on your shelves.

7. Stack your washer and dryer

You can better optimize your available space by stacking your washer and dryer. This is an ideal setup for placing your machines in a closet or if you’re combining your laundry area with another room.

Stacking your machines will allow more room for a folding station and storage unit. You can also use the space between the machines and the wall or cabinets to store your ironing board. 

However, if you’re planning on stacking your machines, make sure they are the same height, width, and depth. If one machine is larger or smaller than the other, the top machine won’t be able to sit still due to the vibration from the spin cycles.

Also, make sure to use a proper stacking kit for your machines; otherwise, you will run the risk of the top machine becoming unstable.
