Fancy frocks have often stolen the show on the red carpet, but as Hollywood’s gents step up their style choices and redefine suiting, that’s all changing. So, which Golden Globes menswear looks have made the biggest shake-up in recent years?

From Timothée Chalamet’s sparkly harness that sparked an online debate to Troye Sivan’s nod to David Byrne, a new study by menswear retailer Suit Direct looks at social media data to discover which men’s looks from the prestigious awards ceremony have impressed the public most.

In first place was Timothée Chalamet’s modern deconstruction of men’s suiting during 2019’s ceremony, which harbored more than 1,993,997 engagements on one Instagram post.

Nick Jonas’ western twist on a classic double-breasted suit during the 2020 awards came in second with over 1,604,627 engagements. Whilst Troye Sivan's contemporary oversized fit came in third with 1,096,243 engagements.

  • Edgar Ramirez (2019) (216,430 engagements)

The star who victoriously appears on the top 15 list more than once is Nick Jonas, who accumulates 2,125,308 total engagements between the two looks.

Timothée Chalamet (2019)

Chalamet is renowned for breaking the rules of formal wear and redefining men’s suiting. The actor’s 2019 Golden Globes look made waves on the internet, with many mistaking his bedazzled bib for a harness. However, the embellished accessory elevated the muted outfit, without being too distracting. Paired with a classic black grandad-collar shirt and trousers, Timothée brings fresh sartorial excitement to men’s red-carpet looks and shows the suit is most definitely not dead.

Nick Jonas (2020)

No stranger to dapper dressing, Nick Jonas’ 2020 double-breasted black satin suit threw the classic tailoring rule book out the window in favor of a fresher, unexpected look. Paired with a blue shirt for a subtle pop of color, the star of the outfit was the bolo tie which offered a stylish nod to Jonas’ Texas roots. Swapping a classic tie for an out-there accessory can really give your look some personality.

Troye Sivan (2019)

Another celebrity whose red carpet looks often subvert the classic suit, at the 2019 Golden Globes Sivan suited up David Byrne-style in a navy oversized ensemble. Playing with different proportions, the tailoring gave the look a contemporary feel, with a nod to Gen Z trends in square-toed shoes, white nail polish and a nose ring.

Dwayne Johnson (2018)

Taking a more traditional approach to tailoring than celebrities whose looks rank higher on the list, Dwayne Johnson’s 2018 red carpet look showcases the timelessness of the black tux. Paired with a singular gold ring; minimalism lets the sharp tailoring do the talking.

Daniel Levy (2021)

Taking the colorful approach in a zesty yellow single-breasted wool ensemble, Daniel Levy’s look for the 2021 digital awards ceremony was a lesson in color-pop haute couture. Paired with a sequin embellished roll neck and chrome platform creepers, the Schitt’s Creek actor dazzled on the virtual red carpet.

Commenting on the research a spokesperson from Suit Direct said “There has been plenty of conversation over the past couple of years on the ‘death of the suit’. However, what we are actually seeing is a rejection of the traditional male dress code, as men look to redefine the rules of classic tailoring and create statements of self-expression in their formal clothing.

“We wanted to look into the most iconic Golden Globes styles in time for the 2023 ceremony, to really showcase that the suit is far from dead.”
