There aren’t many things in life that are as exciting and beautiful as traveling. That is the perfect chance to change your routine for a bit, and go to a place you’ve never visited before, and explore it to the maximum.

That’s something that you can never get tired of. But when you’re a passionate traveler, at times, you can be a little bit reckless and not as cautious because you are probably smitten by all the fantastic landmarks you’re surrounded by.

In these moments, people tend to make certain mistakes when walking around because they simply aren’t familiar enough with the destination they are exploring. And that’s okay. It’s not the end of the world!

Most of these mistakes are relatively benign and not too risky; however, it still doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t pay attention while walking. If you’d like to know which ones are the most common, then stick around to find out!

Many People Look Only One Way

If this sounds familiar, then it’s highly likely it happened to you in the past. Don’t fret! You’re definitely not the only one, because this is by far one of the most common mistakes that isn’t only made by travelers, but by most people, in general.

It’s something that can easily occur to everyone, because, after all, you are in an entirely new place, where the same rules do not apply. In these types of situations, a lot of people step off the curb without checking twice because they are simply used to certain things back at home, or they might be distracted by something.

Whatever the reason may be, it’s of huge importance to pause and (just in case) look both ways. There are lots of fantastic pedestrian safety tips on the web, but this one should be perceived as one of the most crucial ones. Even if you notice that others are crossing the street, you should still pay attention before taking any further steps. You do not want to risk anything, right?

Choosing Unsafe Places

Many pedestrians forget that there are places that aren’t intended for them and that the ones that are, are typically designated. Therefore, it’s never a smart idea to go to places that aren’t safe because it can be pretty unsafe for you.

Instead, always pick a crosswalk whenever you can. But what are you going to do if there’s none? When that’s the case, then be sure to pick the one that’s properly lit and then wait until there’s no vehicle around, or at least it’s too far away from you, so you can freely cross the street.

Besides that, you should stick with the sidewalks whenever that’s possible, and if you notice that there’s no sidewalk in your vicinity, then just walk on the far side of the road that’s facing traffic.

Your Phone Can Wait!

Now, here’s a mistake that the vast majority of people make, regardless of whether they are traveling or not. There are plenty of reasons why people do it. There are those who are too focused on the apps that they’ve downloaded that are designed to help them find certain spots and other useful directions, and yet some people simply cannot leave their phone for a single second because they are “too busy” scrolling, taking selfies, or whatever.

Keep in mind that something like this can be extremely dangerous. For starters, when you are glued to your phone, you can easily miss traffic signals and street signs, or even worse, you will become a perfect target for street thieves.

That’s precisely why you should never use your cellphone when crossing a street (unless it’s very urgent). If you think that you must (for whatever reason) just step to the side and do what’s necessary.

Drinking Large Amounts Of Alcohol

Yes, traveling is a great moment to unwind and relax, and have a few sips of your favorite alcoholic beverage, but drinking large amounts of alcohol and then going for a walk can be extremely dangerous.

Don’t forget that lots of pedestrian accidents occur precisely because of excessive alcohol consumption, not only by the drivers, but by the pedestrians, as well! Alcohol is renowned for impairing physical reflexes and negatively affecting a person’s judgment, which is why it’s never a good idea to drink it if you’re planning to go outside.

If you need to go out, then the best thing that you can do is to grab a cab to steer clear of any dangers on the road.

There’s no denying that walking around is one of the best ways to get to know any place because you get the opportunity to see how it lives and breathes. But it’s also a good way to endanger your safety, and that’s something that should never be overlooked.
