As usual one of fashion’s most daring nights included a healthy dose of hits and even more misses as notable musicians competed for those iconic moon men. The MTV VMAs featured not just some incredible performances but more than a few show-stopping sartorial moments.

Sisters Hadid, fixtures on almost every red carpet, went (somewhat) matching in neutral hues and some skin-baring ensembles complementing their lithe figures. While Song Of The Year winner Lil Nas X shut down the carpet with the Kira-Kira, Prince-inspired moment of our dreams in a head-to-toe sparkling western outfit. Diplo followed suit (literally) in a western meets psychedelic suit and cowboy hat, further proving that this country trend isn’t slowing down. Other highlights included Rosalía in a more subtle yet sultry black Burberry figure-hugging gown, and Lizzo in a Jessica-Rabbit Moschino moment that unsurprisingly brought the va va voom to the VMAs. The “Juice” singer also gave a notable performance where she ripped off a trench to reveal a show stopping bright yellow bodysuit.

And there’s no place like the VMAs for Marc Jacobs. The lauded designer proved he is in fact the fashion trailblazer while accepting the first ever Fashion Trailblazer award last night in a pair of ruby slippers by Prada and an olive green suit tailored to perfection by Huntsman Savile Row. A slew of models donning some of Jacobs’ most memorable creations also walked the red carpet to show us sitting at home how it’s done.

However as always, not all stars hit the mark last night. Both H.E.R. and YouTube sensation Tana Mongeau sported live snakes on the red carpet - a look that is outdated and seems cruel. And let’s face it guys - Britney did it better. On the opposite end of the spectrum were Jamie-Lynn Sigler’s all brown Staud ensemble and DJ Khaled’s wrinkled Hawaiian shirt proving that, even at the VMAs, some stars will always play it safe. While Shay Johnson’s rhinestone and lace-up Ed Hardy-esque gown was something we regrettably won’t soon forget.
